On graduation day, May's boyfriend Colby promised her a road trip to the coast. But when the morning came, he gave the passenger seat to her best friend Ashley, saying Ashley was struggling after a breakup. May, who suffers from motion sickness in the back seat, swallowed her words as Colby adjusted the air conditioning for Ashley and asked May not to pick a fight over a seat.
At a boutique inn by the shore, Colby handed the ocean-view suite May had booked to Ashley, then ordered a dinner of Ashley's favorite shellfish, forgetting May's allergy. He gave Ashley the necklace he had once promised May. When May asked him to put the convertible top up against the wind that worsened her migraines, he refused. Just before leaving, the innkeeper slipped May an envelope postmarked three years in the future, in her own handwriting, containing seven words: keep your hands on the steering wheel.
