From the back cover

For three years, Bella's husband Tristan Hall has remembered every one of her periods and known all her likes and dislikes by heart. Then his childhood sweetheart, Aria Smith, brings chestnuts from her hometown as an offering for the mountain god. Pregnant and fighting morning sickness, Bella spits out a chestnut, and Aria runs crying to Tristan, warning that the mountain god's wrath could kill her. Without letting Bella explain, Tristan locks her in the basement cold storage to reflect.

After he leaves, Aria turns on the refrigeration and tells Bella that Tristan belongs to her alone. As the temperature drops, Bella pounds on the door, begging to be let out and pleading for the baby she never got to announce. No one answers. Her soul rises above her frozen body, and she watches Tristan come home, believe Aria's story that she packed her things and left, and go on winning cases and preparing candlelit dinners.

Only a faint stench from the basement hints at what he refuses to see.
