From the back cover

One month before her wedding, Carmela Russo's mother is hospitalized after a dog bite, and the dog's owner turns out to be Dyrroth Pittman's junior schoolmate, Cleo Atkins. Dyrroth brings Cleo to the hospital, dismisses the injury as nothing, and blames Carmela's mother for provoking the dog. He then leaves for what he calls a project abroad.

An hour later, her mother's condition worsens and she dies. Dyrroth never answers Carmela's messages or calls, yet a post from Cleo shows him smiling on a beach with her. At the funeral, Carmela kneels alone by the grave and ends the engagement.

Half a month later, Dyrroth returns with Cleo and her snarling dog, demanding Carmela apologize to Cleo. When Carmela refuses, he shouts at her for the first time. She walks away with a resignation letter in her pocket, and the next day finds Dyrroth and Cleo waiting at home, accusing her of killing the dog.
