Ernest is six years old, and his mother's obsession with cleanliness rules his life. At home he must lay exactly three layers of toilet paper on the seat, spray disinfectant twice from left to right, and scrub his hands for the length of two birthday songs. Her love, she says, is only for clean children.

When he cannot urinate standing up in the school restroom and wets his pants, his mother recoils from his touch and wipes her sleeve four times. While she lectures his teacher, Ms. Levitt, on rules and boundaries, and nearby parents murmur that she is right, Ernest slips away to the flower bed behind the school. There he scrubs his wet pants and bare legs in the icy basin, certain that once he is clean his mother will hold his hand again.

Ms. Levitt and his mother run toward the water, where a small figure crouches by the basin in the cold.

I sobbed in shame.

When my mother arrived with a cold expression on her face, she let out a sigh.
