At a dance competition hosted by her husband Brandon's company, the stage collapses and a wife's young daughter Nina is left bleeding and unconscious. Brandon walks past his own injured child to carry away Vanessa, his first love, and her daughter Bella, insisting Vanessa has a heart condition and Bella is terrified. His assistant Jason bars every route to help, ordering the venue cleared, snatching away her phone, and blocking the exit so no ambulance can be called.

When the company's private medical team finally arrives, a call from Brandon limits them to conservative treatment, and the child is given pills instead of surgery while her mother is pinned down and sedated. In an arranged marriage she had hoped to warm, she now sees herself and her daughter treated as disposable beside Brandon and Vanessa's reputation.

As the sedative clouds her mind, Vanessa's voice comes over the speaker, and the mother's fury hardens into a vow she intends to keep.
